The NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association will co-sponsor a Youth Day on Saturday October 8th from 8:30am to 2pm at 310 South Tremont Drive in Greensboro, NC. This event is open to children and teenagers who stutter and their parents. It will be a time to meet others who are living with stuttering, learn about stuttering, and gain support. Lunch will be provided and financial assistance is available. For more information or to register, please visit NSA NC Youth Day 2011. July 12th Recap and August Meeting Information

The NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association met on Tuesday July 12, 2011 from 7-9pm in the Phillips room at Elliott University Center at UNCG. This meeting had our highest attendance for a summer meeting ever! The meeting was attended by 5 people who stutter, 1 SLP, and 1 parent. We also welcomed two new comers. The meeting began with a round robin reading of the welcome words. A round of introductions followed for our first timers. We discussed experiences with public speaking and presenting for classes after one attendee expressed concern about this issue for the upcoming semester. We also talked about our experiences with attending the NSA conference and encouraged those who have not gone to come to Tampa next year. Then we watched some segments from the Stuttering Foundation's dvd "If You Stutter: Advice for Adults." Some great discussion was generated by the segment about people saying "slow down" or "just relax" in response to a disfluency. The meeting was closed by a round robin reading of the closing words.

The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday August 9th from 7-9pm. However, I will not be able to facilitate the meeting because of a personal emergency. If you would like to meet informally as a group somewhere, then leave a comment or send an email to nsagso at yahoo dot com. I can send out an email next week if people respond that they would like to meet.

The NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association met last Tuesday March 8th from 7-9pm in the Phillips room at UNCG's Elliott University Center. The meeting was attended by 3 people who stutter and 1 SLP. We opened the meeting by reading the welcome words in a round robin style. One person shared his experience of attending his first NSA conference last summer. He reported really enjoying the experience overall and plans on trying to attend the conference this summer in TX. The chapter leader shared about the Our Time summer camp for children who stutter that is moving to the mountains of NC for the first time this summer. More information can be found at www.ourtimecamp.org. Our chapter also talked about starting to plan the 2nd NSA Youth Day and CEU workshop in Greensboro, NC. We're hoping to have the Youth Day on Saturday October 15th and the CEU workshop the day before. The majority of our meeting was spent discussing the Oscar-winning The King's Speech using questions developed by the Dallas NSA chapter. Everyone at the meeting had seen the film and loved it. I wanted to share this clip of actual footage of King George VI speaking publicly. It was mentioned at the meeting.

At the end of the meeting, we read the closing words round robin a little early so that we could walk around Elliott University Center, the building where we meet, to look at options for our meeting room next year. Our regular meeting space will be closing to be incorporated into another space. We like the informality and comfort of the Phillips Room, so this is our new permanent meeting space starting next month. Our next chapter meeting will be Tuesday April 12th from 7-9pm in the Phillips Room on the ground floor of Elliott University Center on the campus of UNCG.

The NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association is scheduled to meet next Tuesday 1/11/11 from 7-9pm in the Benbow Room on the ground floor of Elliott University Center on the campus of UNCG. However, the potential winter weather may cancel our meeting. If you are on our chapter listserve, you will get an email on Tuesday if the meeting is cancelled. On a separate note, if you haven't gotten a chance to go see the movie "The King's Speech" it is playing at Carousel Cinemas (www.carouselbattleground.com) off Battleground. I highly recommend it!

December Meeting Recap

The NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association met Tuesday December 8th from 7-9pm in the Benbow Room in the Elliott Center on the campus of UNCG. There were 5 people in attendance (4 people who stutter and 1 chapter leader/SLP). The meeting started with a round robin reading of the welcome words. Then, each person shared their favorite holiday memory or holiday tradition. The chapter leader relayed a discussion that had been held on the chapter leader's list-serve about if the concept of being called a support group or self-help group deterred people from attending for the first time. The consensus of the group was that self-help denotes the idea of practicing our speech and support group denotes discussing how stuttering is affecting our lives. Many in the group liked the idea of devoting some of our meeting's time to practicing speaking.

This started a great discussion about the purpose and future plans of our own chapter. One point that was brought up is that our chapter's website and entry on the NSA's local chapter list makes it seem at first that the chapter is only for students of UNCG because we meet on the campus. Another attendee reported that they felt more comfortable and prepared about what to expect from reading the meeting recaps on our website (nsagso.blogspot.com). The discussion naturally turned to what lies ahead for the chapter next year. At the next meeting, flyers will be handed out for people to post around town. We'll try to host a social event at a restaurant or coffee place on a non-meeting day to hopefully meet new people. We'll also start putting the meetings back up on local community calendars. The rest of the meeting was about having some fun, so we played the party game Apples to Apples. The closing words were read to end the meeting. Our next meeting will be Tuesday January 12th from 7-9pm in the Benbow Room on the ground/bottom floor of the Elliott Center on the campus of UNCG. I hope that everyone has a happy and safe holiday and enjoys our winter weather!

The NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association met on Tuesday July 14th from 7-8:30pm in the Benbow Room on the ground floor of Elliott University Center on the campus of UNCG. The meeting was attended by 3 people (2 PWS and 1 SLP), and there was one first time meeting attendee. Drew opened the meeting by reading the welcoming words. Emily gave a brief history of the NSA and the purpose of the Triad chapter. We did introductions of ourselves for the benefit of the first timer. This lead into discussions about previous speech therapy experiences, resources for stutterers who attend UNCG, and support systems for PWS. After a short break, we listened to a portion of a Stutter Talk podcast where Drew had called in to the show to ask about their opinion of the word "fluency" being oppressive. After listening to the podcast's hosts respond to Drew's question, we gave our own opinions of the terms "stuttering" vs. "fluency." We all agreed on the hosts' point that stuttering/fluency therapy should include emotional aspects of stuttering too. We also discussed if "fluency" was more of a clinical term while "stuttering" is used/recognized more often in conversational contexts outside of the therapy environment. Because Jason had driven from an hour and a half away to attend the meeting, we agreed to end earlier than usual. Jason read the closing words to end the meeting. The next meeting will be on Tuesday August 11th from 7-9pm in the Benbow Room on the campus of UNCG in EUC.

Pagoclone Research Trial

The NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association will not hold its meeting at the regular date of the 2nd Tuesday of the month for April. Instead, the meeting has been moved to Sunday April 19th from 2-4pm and will not be a formal meeting at UNCG. We will have an informal meet and greet at Panera Bread off Wendover Avenue. The NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association met on Tuesday February 10th from 7-9pm in the Elliott Center on the campus of UNCG. Five people attended the meeting (1 chapter leader, 2 people who stutter, 2 SLP students), and three were first timers. Laura read the welcoming words to begin the meeting. Emily explained the purpose of the NSA and chapter meetings. We then split into teams to play a Jeopardy game about stuttering information, and everyone learned at least one new fact. Then, after the break everyone wrote down two questions and put them into a paper bag. Each person pulled a question out of the bag and answered it. Some of the questions were more generic about people's favorite foods or travels and other questions were more specific to stuttering. We all learned more about each other. Kini read the closing words to finish up the meeting. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday March 10th from 7-9pm in the Benbow room in Elliott Center. We learned that this meeting will take place during UNCG's spring break, but we hope many will still be able to attend.

The NC Triad Chapter of the National Stuttering Association met on Tuesday November 11th. Five people (2 people who stutter, 2 speech-language pathology students, and 1 chapter leader) were in attendance. The meeting began with Drew reading the welcoming words. Emily explained the benefits of becoming a member of the NSA and the process of becoming a member. She also covered the "Change for the Better" program. More information about joining the NSA and Change for the Better can be found on the NSA website. Then, each of the SLP students discussed an article from the ISAD online conference. The first article was titled "Is a Stuttering Fluency Therapist better than a Fluent Stuttering Therapist?" and focused on the issue of stutterers becoming SLPs. The second article was titled "Perfectionism and Stuttering: Is there a connection?" and talked about such issues as all-or-nothing thinking, focusing on the negative, and self-defeating thoughts. Both articles generated a lot of discussion. The group then played the PowerR game from the Stuttering Foundation of America and discussed the pros and cons of the game, which is meant to be used a tool in fluency therapy. The meeting closed with Elizabeth reading the closing words.

October 14th Meeting Recap

After a slow summer of meetings, the NC Triad Chapter of the National Stuttering Association came back with a bang for fall! The chapter met on Tuesday night October 14th from 7-9pm in the Benbow Room on the ground floor of Elliott University Center on the campus of UNCG. The meeting was attended by 9 people (1 chapter leader, 4 people who stutter, and 4 SLP graduate students). Christine opened the meeting by reading the welcoming words. There were 4 first-time attendees so Emily gave a brief history of the NSA and the purpose of the group. Then, we did a round of introductions and what brought people to the meeting. The ISAD online conference was brought up on the big screen and we browsed around the sight as a group. The title of one paper brought up a discussion about situations where a stutterer is fluent. Three out of four of the people who stutter report being fluent when they are very angry and yelling or arguing with someone else. Meeting attendees were encouraged to visit the site on their own and pick a paper that interests them to talk about at an upcoming meeting.

Then, we watched clips of Joe Biden speaking about stuttering at various meetings. Drew was gracious enough to put together these clips. One of the clips was of Biden speaking at a benefit for the American Institute for Stuttering. Biden used the word "debilitating" multiple times when referring to stuttering, and this brought about an interesting discussion about whether "debilitating" is an appropriate descriptor. Arguments for both sides of the debate were presented. Towards the end of the meeting, the chapter leader brought up that the SpeechEasy representative for the area proposed coming to a chapter meeting. The group discussed this possibility and decided that they were open to this idea. Sheree read the closing words to end the meeting. The chapter will meet again on Tuesday November 11th from 7-9pm in the Benbow Room.

July Meeting Recap

The NC Triad chapter of the NSA held its monthly meeting on Tuesday July 8th. Two people (1 chapter leader and 1 person who stutters) were in attendance. Drew read the welcoming words to open the meeting. Karrie Craig has stepped down as chapter leader because she will be moving to Raleigh next month. Emily Sharpe will continue to act as chapter leader. We discussed how we like our new room (Benbow), especially because we don't have to put chairs and tables back up after each meeting! We then talked about ideas for future meeting topics. Ideas included having a speaker from UNCG's Public Speaking Center and learning about fluency devices such as the SpeechEasy. Please email us if you have any ideas for future meetings! We then watched a documentary about the making of Rocket Science. The director spoke about how awkward and lonely high school can be for any person, not just stutterers. This point was also brought up in the meeting when we watched the film. The NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association met on Tuesday May 13th and was attended by the 2 chapter leaders and 2 people who stutter. Sheree read the welcoming words to open the meeting. Emily talked about the national NSA conference being held in the NYC area and how to become an NSA member. Our chapter was proud that 75% of the meeting attendees are already NSA members. We finished watching the film Rocket Science, and all agreed that we enjoyed watching the first half more than the second half. We also discussed our thoughts about the technique of singing to prevent stuttering, which was used in the film. One of the attendees has personally used this technique at home but was not comfortable using it in public. The June meeting cannot be held in our usual room because Elliott University Center is being used by the university for student orientation. We decided to hold our June meeting at First Carolina Deli, which is at 1635 Spring Garden Street just down the street from UNCG. This meeting will be an informal social gathering. We will be there starting at 6:30pm on Tuesday June 10th. Drew read the closing words to end the meeting. Beginning in July, meetings will move to a different room, Benbow, on the ground floor of Elliott University Center. Meetings will still be held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 7-9pm.

April Meeting Recap & May Meeting Agenda

The NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association held its last meeting on April 8, 2008. The meeting was attended by 10 people (4 people who stutter, 4 SLP students, and 2 chapter leaders), including two new faces! Drew read the welcoming words. Melanie Buchanan from UNCG's Career Services Center was the guest speaker and spoke about stuttering and the job search process. Her key piece of advice was for the person who stutters to decide when (and if) they feel comfortable addressing that they are a person who stutters. By bringing up the topic early on, you may not be as anxious during the interview and can focus on your answers rather than trying not to stutter. You can let the employer know when setting up the interview. She also discussed the importance of mock interviews, whether it is with a friend or career counselor. Ms. Buchanan also advised to be positive when talking about stuttering by thinking of examples about how being a stutterer has made you a better employee (i.e. being a good listener, speaking concisely). General job search information, such as resume building tips, was given out. Some of this information can be found on the Career Services Center's website (csc.dept.uncg.edu/students). Ms. Buchanan's lecture generated fantastic discussion about people's personal experiences with the job search. Dichel read the closing words.

Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday May 13th from 7-9pm in the Claxton Room on the ground floor of Elliott University Center on UNCG's campus. Additional information from the Stuttering Foundation of America regarding the topic of the April meeting will be available. Some of this information is attached to this post. We will finish watching the film Rocket Science that was started at the March meeting. Also, we will decide where to meet for the June meeting, which will be held at a restaurant. The NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association met on Tuesday March 18th. We were pleased to have 10 people attend the meeting, which was our largest so far! The meeting was attended by 4 people who stutter, 1 family member, 3 SLP students, and the 2 chapter co-leaders. Karrie read the welcoming words. We began by sharing one good event and one struggle that has occurred since the previous meeting. Then we watched the first half of the film Rocket Science. We stopped halfway through the movie so there would be time for discussion. Discussion of the movie included how it related or didn't relate to the lives of the stutterers when they were in high school. One comment was that the movie was relatable to those who stutter and those who don't because high school is an awkward time for everyone. There was also time for the SLP students to ask questions for the people who stutter and the people who stutter to give advice to the future speech therapists. The NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association held its monthly meeting on Tuesday February 12th. We were excited to see two new faces at the meeting! The meeting was attended by the two chapter leaders and three people who stutter. Drew opened the meeting by reading the welcoming words, which was followed by a round of introductions for the new attendees. We went over the history of the NSA and goals of chapter meetings. The topic of the evening was avoidance, so we discussed difficult speaking situations such as ordering in restaurants, talking on the phone, speaking up in classes, job interviews, and dating. A story shared by one attendee brought up the issue of stuttering and bilingualism. We also brainstormed about how to confront others who react to stuttering by laughing because of a personal experience encountered by one of the attendees. The meeting was wrapped up by Karrie reading the closing words. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday March 11th.

The NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association held its first meeting of the new year on Tuesday January 8th. The two chapter leaders and one person who stutters were in attendance. Due to the limited attendance, the original agenda was replaced by discussion of how to increase meeting attendance. Ideas included advertising at other area universities, contacting local papers, and posting another round of flyers. Those in attendance decided that the issue with attendance seems to be getting those who contact us about the group to actually attend a meeting. We are not sure if the problem is the day or time of the meetings, location, parking, or something else. We would appreciate any insight on this issue.

The group also decided to move forward with plans for an informal meeting. We will be at Panera Bread on Wendover Avenue from 2-4pm on Sunday January 20th. There will be no formal meeting agenda because this will be a meet and greet, and we hope to see many new faces there! Our next regular meeting will be on Tuesday February 12th from 7-9pm.

Next Tuesday, January 8th, the NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association will hold its first meeting for 2008 from 7-9pm in the Claxton Room on the first floor of Elliott University Center on the campus of UNC Greensboro. We will continue discussing issues, such as how stuttering affects life choices, brought up in the stuttering documentary we watched at the November meeting. Also, we will discuss the possibility of holding an additional informal meeting later in January at a coffee shop. If you are interested in this possibility, please email us with what days/times work best for your schedule. We want to include as many people as possible in this decision.

StutterTalk Podcast

StutterTalk is a weekly internet program by three men who stutter and are also speech-language pathologists (or in school to become one). They discuss a wide variety of topics that are important to the stuttering community. You can check out each week's topic at their website www.stuttertalk.com and subscribe to the podcast. A few weeks ago the program featured Dr. Dennis Drayna who is researching the genetic components of stuttering for the National Institute of Health. Dr. Drayna presented his research at the National Stuttering Association's convention in Atlanta, Georgia this past June.

The NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association held a holiday social at Ham's Restaurant in place of its December meeting. The social was attended by 2 chapter leaders, 1 person who stutters, 1 speech-language pathologist, and her spouse. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday January 8th from 7-9pm in the Claxton Room on the first floor of Elliott University Center on the campus of UNCG. We are considering holding a second meeting later in January at a coffee shop for those who find it difficult to make our regular meeting. November Meeting Recap

This past Tuesday, November 13th, the NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association held its third meeting. Seven people (2 chapter leaders, 3 people who stutter, 1 family member, and 1 speech-language pathology student) were in attendance. We were excited to see four new faces at this meeting! After Emily read the welcoming words, we had a round of introductions to get to know everyone. Then, we watched the MTV documentary "True Life: I Stutter" and discussed reactions to the film. One person had been through the stuttering therapy program featured in the film and talked about how his experience compared. This lead to a discussion about various stuttering therapy experiences from both the person who stutters' point of view and the speech-language pathologist's point of view. Then, the choice of restaurant for next month's holiday social was debated. This social will take the place of our regular monthly meeting for December. Karrie read the closing words to end the meeting. Next month we will meet on Tuesday December 11th. As soon as the location is chosen, it will be posted on this website.

Stuttering Documentary

Tomorrow (Sunday November 4th) at 2pm MTV will air a new episode for its True Life documentary series titled "I Stutter." The documentary follows three young adults who stutter. Footage for this documentary was taped at the national NSA convention in Atlanta this summer. We may be discussing this episode at an upcoming support group meeting.

The NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association held its second meeting this past week on Tuesday October 9th. Four people were in attendance (two people who stutter and the co-chapter leaders). Karrie read the welcome words to open the meeting. The meeting started by everyone sharing one reason they're glad the last month (since the first meeting) was over and one thing they are looking forward to before the next meeting. We then discussed ideas of how to increase attendance at future meetings. The main topic of the evening was avoidance and how it impacts everyone's lives, even if you do not stutter. Tuesday September 11th marked the inaugural meeting of the NC Triad chapter of the National Stuttering Association. Four people were in attendance (two people who stutter and the co-chapter leaders).
